NaFFAA Nevada celebrates its 126th Independence Day
The National Federation of Filipino American Associations–Nevada (NaFFAA NV) recently hosted a highly successful 126th Philippine Independence Gala, last June 15, 2024 at the Orleans Hotel & Casino, drawing a record-breaking crowd of over 400 guests for an evening of culture, recognition, and community empowerment.
“This event was a testament to the unity and pride of the Filipino-American community,” said NaFFAA NV President Jacque de Joya, reflecting on the unprecedented turnout.
NaFFAA officers in attendance included key leaders from both state and national chapters: NaFFAA DMR President Sally Balecha, NaFFAA National Trustee and Hon. Consul of Southern Nevada Amie Belmonte, NaFFAA National Trustee Art De Joya, NaFFAA National Founding Co-Chair Gloria Caoile, NaFFAA National President Mariela Fletcher, NaFFAA NV President Jacque de Joya, and NaFFAA National Trustee Gio Duaqui.
The evening opened with stirring performances from Songspell Performing Arts of Davao, who led the Philippine national anthem and a patriotic dance number. The U.S. national anthem was beautifully performed by Breanna de Santos, setting a dignified tone for the celebration.
Event Highlights Included:
Scholarship Awards: NaFFAA NV honored outstanding high school students preparing for college. The scholarships, a key part of NaFFAA’s mission, aim to uplift the next generation through education.
Community Leader Recognition: Thirty-five Filipino American community leaders were honored for their continued contributions to civic life, advocacy, and service in Nevada.
Cultural Showcase: A highlight of the night was a Rigodon de Honor performed by NaFFAA officers and members, paying tribute to Filipino heritage through dance and tradition.
In a show of increasing civic engagement, candidates for public office in Nevada also attended the gala, recognizing the Filipino American community as a vital voting bloc. Their participation highlighted the growing political influence of Fil-Ams across the state. NaFFAA NV was presented with official proclamations from the Governor of Nevada and the Mayor of Las Vegas, acknowledging its work and impact in the community.
For the first time, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department participated in full force. Capt. Katie Geiger addressed the crowd, assuring attendees, “You can call on us for any assistance you may need.”
The evening was a powerful blend of cultural celebration, civic awareness, and community unity—hallmarks of NaFFAA NV’s ongoing mission to amplify the Filipino American voice in Nevada and beyond.
